Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions and Benefits

A Flame Cap Kiln is a specialized container designed to convert woody biomass and agricultural waste into biochar through a controlled combustion process. Unlike traditional burning methods that release carbon into the atmosphere, our kiln captures carbon in stable biochar form.

Traditional burning releases most carbon as CO2, contributing to greenhouse gases. The Flame Cap Kiln’s controlled process converts carbon into stable biochar that can remain sequestered for hundreds of years, reducing emissions by up to 70% compared to open burning.

The kiln efficiently processes woody materials, including prunings, branches, small logs, agricultural residues, and land clearing debris. It works best with materials ranging from 1-6 inches in diameter.

A complete burn cycle typically takes 1-6 hours, depending on material type, feedstock quantity, moisture content, and kiln size.  Additional material prepping and drying time may be necesasry. Cooling may require an additional 12-24 hours before biochar can be safely handled.

No, the kiln is designed for straightforward operation. After a brief learning period, most users can operate it efficiently. We provide full training on delivery (Worth £250).  Detailed instructions and queries can be provided on request.

Typically, you can expect to convert approximately 25-40% of your input biomass volume into biochar. For example, our 250 model produces up to 1,200 Litres of biochar per full load.

Requirements vary by location. Generally, the Flame Cap Kiln produces minimal smoke and meets most local burn regulations. We recommend checking with local authorities regarding outdoor burning permits. Councils may make exceptions for biochar production due to its environmental benefits.

Our kilns are constructed from heavy-duty steel and finished with a protective coating designed for durability. With proper maintenance, you can expect 5+ years of regular use. The exact lifespan depends on frequency of use and storage conditions.

Our Kiln is uniquely designed to be flat-packed for ease of transportation and storage.  While the kiln is weather-resistant, we recommend storing it in a covered area when not in use to maximize its lifespan. If outdoor storage is necessary, consider using a cover during extended periods of non-use.

Basic safety equipment is recommended, including heat-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and appropriate clothing. A metal rake or poker for managing materials and a water source for quenching and general safety is also useful.  We supply you with a fire proof blanket to reduce water requirements when quenching.

The kiln captures up to 50% of the carbon from the original biomass in stable BioChar form, which can remain sequestered for centuries. This significantly reduces emissions compared to open burning or natural decomposition of the same materials.

ROI varies depending on your application. For agricultural users, biochar can improve soil quality and crop yields up to 45%, potentially paying for the kiln within 3-5 growing seasons. Additionaly, savings on waste management disposal costs can offset the price further within 1-2 years for high-volume producers.

Yes! There’s a growing market for biochar. High-quality biochar currently sells for £400 – £1,600 per Ton in retail markets. We can provide further guidance on biochar quality standards and potential market opportunities.

Our kilns are currntly made to order and come with a 2-6 week lead time.  We’ll keep you posted throughout production and will contact you to arrange your demonstration at a time that’s convienient to you.

Our kilns are shipped directly to your location. They arrive flat-packed and are fully assembled during the demonstration.

Yes, we offer multiple sizes to accommodate different volumes and sizes of biomass processing. Currently we have two sizes, a 1.25m square model as a highly portable device for dealing with smaller BioMass, and a 2.5m long version that can accomodate long limbs for minimal processing.

All our kilns come with a standard 28-Day warranty covering manufacturing defects.

Due to the continual Innovation nature of our business, we plan to provide a Buy Back scheme for upgrades, if existing users wish to upgrade, we will then resell the second hand models at discount to enable more users on their Carbon Capture journey.
